Great news for all the DJ Quik fans! MTV has reported that the compton rapper, who recently released his Greatest Hits album, is set to conduct an orchestra for the score of the new Chris Rock comedy entitled "Head Of State"! Quik himself said on Monday : "It's another avenue for me and I love it, it's strings and brass and orchestration mixed with hip-hop. And the main vignette in the movie I did with Nate Dogg doing the singing." In addition to this, DJ Quik will also at least record one track for the soundtrack of the movie, which should be in theaters March 28 2003.
DJ Quik has been putting in major work lately. He has also produced songs for Talib Kweli, Beanie Sigel and Nate Dogg, who he produced "Get Up" for, the first single from Nate's new self titled album. Quik said this song is : "Parliament-Funkish, but without sampling. After hanging with George Clinton, I get it. I know how to produce these records and make them sound authentic. He showed me some things."
But thats not all for the Quikster, he's also been working with some of his Bungalo Records artists, such as Suga Free, Butch Cassidy and Amir, the newcomer of Persian descent. DJ Quik also spoke on Amir : "I was in a studio with Butch, and Amir was in another session and he opened up the possibility of doing some production. So we talked a little bit and he was hungry, and I listened to his projects and it was another kind of music for me, the whole Persian and Arabic thing." It was through Amir that DJ Quik discovered the sample for "Addictive", Truth Hurts hit-single! We can expect big things from Amir, who because of his skin color will naturally be compared to Eminem. Amir also has songs with controversial lyrics on his debut album "Images of My Mind" (due early 2003), tracks like "Bombs Over Saddam", "What's My Life Worth" and "Bloody Murder". Erick Sermon also produced a cut for Amir, called "My Life Is Done", which is a kind of autobiography, which explains how he was getting into trouble and his youth.
We also have good news for all Suga Free fans! After DJ Quik is done with Amir's album, he and Bungalo Records will focus on his follow up to "Street Gospel" from 1997, which is a classic in the eyes of many. Quik said "It's Richard Pryor's lyrics over some Dr. Dre-type production. It's real interesting, it's comedy but really street, really vulgar, on the pimp thing. He's a rhythmic dude. He can beat on the table and rap at the same time without missing a beat. That takes a lot of talent."
