The New York Post has run a front page report on the death of Run DMC star Jam Master Jay, claiming that the supposedly clean-living DJ was killed over a drug deal.
According to the newspaper, Curtis Scoon a former colleague of the star hired a professional hitman to kill Jay having lost $15,000 in a collapsed drugs deal.
Police sources told the paper that Jay (Jason Mizell) and Scoon both supplied $15,000 to buy two kilos of cocaine in 1994 though investigators learned that suppliers ripped off the pair. Scoon believed that Mizell was in on the scam and allegedly began making threats against him.
Authorities say Scoon has held a grudge against Mizell ever since and that about a month ago, he began to pressurise the star for money once more.
The New York Post reports that Scoon plotted to kill Mizell after the DJ claimed he couldn´t pay him the money. He allegedly sent a hitman and an ex-convict to Run DMC´s studios on October 30 where the gunman shot Mizell at point-blank range, whilst the ex-con served as a lookout on the street.
Two witnesses to the event, singer Lydia and Urieco Rincon, have not - reportedly - been co-operative with police and the gunman remains at large.
Scoon´s lawyer, Marvyn Kornberg told the New York Post that he would not allow police to question his client until they made an arrest.
"Any time they want to arrest my client, we will be happy to produce him," he said. "The truth of the matter is, they are barking up the wrong tree".
