Award-winning documentary filmmaker Lauren Lazin will direct and produce MTV's first feature film documentary on the life of hip-hop artist Tupac Shakur, announced Van Toffler, president of MTV.

The life of murdered musician-turned-actor will be spearheaded by Lazin who has done several MTV documentaries, as well as numerous projects for PBS.

"Tupac was an UNDENIABLE force in music, hip-hop culture and with our audience," said Toffler. "He continues to sell millions of records and remains one of the most popular artists on MTV."

MTV will partner with Amura Entertainment, founded by Shakur's mother, Afeni Shakur, in production of the project. She will also act as an Executive Producer in an effort to keep the film as accurate as possible. "The past five years have been extremely painful watching and listening while others incorrectly attempted to define who my son really was," said Afeni Shakur, "Now...the true story of Tupac will finally be shared with the world."
