MTV Films, Afeni Shakur to Release Tupac Documentary
By Mark Allwood, BETi Music News
MTV Films and Amaru Entertainment have joined forces to release the first and only feature documentary that takes an intimate and personal look at one of entertainment's most complex, influential and intriguing artists of all time--Tupac Amaru Shakur.
Amaru Entertainment is owned by Tupac's mother, Afeni Shakur. The announcement of the documentary was made by Van Toffler, president of MTV, MTV 2 and MTV Productions. "It is only fitting that the Tupac story will mark our first foray into feature film documentaries," said Toffler in a statement. "Tupac was an undeniable force in music, hip-hop culture and with our audience. He continues to sell millions of records and remains one of the most popular artists on MTV."
The film will be created with Afeni and be directed / produced by award-winning filmmaker Lauren Lazin, who has directed, produced, written and edited more than forty documentaries for MTV and PBS. The documentary is currently in production.
"Tupac was an extraordinary artist who continues to have a profound influence on music, young people and hip-hop culture," said Lazin. "This documentary will take a unique and inspiring look at a remarkable international icon."
The documentary will include never-before-seen Tupac concert, home-movie and video footage; rare photos donated by his family, close friends and the MTV archives; and exclusive excerpts from his poetry, journals and personal letters. Tupac's music and unreleased songs will also be featured.
"The past five years have been extremely painful watching and listening while others incorrectly attempted to define who my son really was," said Afeni, who will also serve as the project's executive producer. "Now, through patience, the strength of my family, and faith in God the true story of Tupac will finally be shared with the world."
A title soundtrack from Amaru / Interscope will be released in conjunction with the film and the first official biography of Tupac's life will be released (release date TBA) from Pocketbooks / MTV Books.
Tupac Shakur's music continues to sell millions of copies despite the artist's untimely death during a still unsolved drive by shooting in Las Vegas in 1996. Shakur reached #20 recently on the Recording Industry Association of America's list of best-selling solo artists of all time.
Afeni Shakur lives in the Atlanta, Georgia suburb of Stone Mountain, where she runs the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation, an organization that fulfills one of Tupac's dreams by providing opportunities for youth to pursue their creative and artistic endeavors. The foundation is currently in the process of building the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts in Stone Mountain.
