Dr. Boyce Watkins, prominent Syracuse Professor and author of “What if George Bush were a Black Man?” appeared with hip hop star Method Man on the ESPN2 show “Quite Frankly with Stephen A. Smith.” The show has a new Wednesday night format that consists of panelists discussing various issues in society and sports. The panel also included tennis star Vince Spadia.
During the show, several topics were discussed, including: “What if George Bush were a Black Man?”, “Should OJ Simpson lose the rights to use his image to earn a living?”, and “Should Charles Barkley run for governor?” “There are brothers rotting upstate for little things they did,” says Watkins, when speculating on President Bush as a black man. “They didn’t get those second chances that people like President Bush receive. So, if he were a black man, chances are that his choices would have left him dead or in jail like a lot of other black men who lived the same way.”
Regarding Barkley’s possible run for Governor of the state of Alabama, the panel was mixed. Method Man felt that Barkley was a “hater”, angry at anyone who has won the championship ring that he never received. Stephen A. Smith, the host of the show, felt that the panelists should not be so hard on Barkley, but Watkins agreed with Method Man. “Barkley’s a little bit of a haterologist,” says Watkins. “You have to give him credit for saying whatever is on his mind. The problem is that there is never anything in his brain to begin with.”
But Dr. Watkins is not completely down on Barkley. He feels that if Barkley is sincere about his mission to help the poor, he is just as qualified as anyone else to be in office. “I don’t hate Charles,” says Watkins, who also wrote “Everything you ever wanted to know about college.” “He is a strong black man, and I respect him for that. I just haven’t always agreed with him.”
The panel also speculated on whether or not the country was ready for a female president. Watkins feels that “Hillary Clinton has the biggest testicles in her household,” and that “Our country has been hurt because we have never given a woman a chance to have a powerful position.” At the same time, Watkins is down on Hillary Clinton in terms of her commitment to the African-American community. “It’s one thing to show up at church, eat barbecue and pretend to be a Baptist minister,” says Watkins, who has been asked to help Senator Clinton obtain votes in Upstate New York. “But it’s another thing to actually support tangible policies that will help our people. As much as I love Hillary, I will probably vote independent in the next presidential election.”
