MixCast, a leader in hip-hop and urban lifestyle television, today announced the launch of its residential television channel with Akimbo, the world’s first Internet video-on-demand service for television. The MixCast Channel on Akimbo will offer viewers programming from many of the most respected brands in hip-hop and will allow users to rent full DVDs as well as watch shorter programs for free.
MixCast is a worldwide network of independent channels that document urban cultures in their respective cities and genres, thus making the programming groundbreaking and highly credible. Each channel’s programming includes exclusive event coverage, interviews and performances by major artists, documentaries, and profiles of local and underground legends that are usually relegated to folklore.
The Akimbo Service features more than 13,000 high-quality mainstream and specialty video titles in over 200 categories, including independent and classic films, music television, animated shows, world sports, foreign language content, travel videos, children’s programs and much more. All consumers need to subscribe to the Akimbo Service and have a broadband Internet connection. A monthly subscription costs $9.99 a month, and they can browse the user-friendly Akimbo Guide on their TV screens and choose content to download for viewing directly on TV, whenever they want.
"Our expansion into the residential market with Akimbo is critical to our goal of making authentic urban lifestyle programming available to all consumers on any platform," says Gary S. Murray II, Founder of MixCast. “The Akimbo Service is available on a variety of platforms – including Microsoft Media Center Edition 2005 PCs, as well as the new RCA-Akimbo Player and this fall on the AT&T Homezone home entertainment service – and we are pleased to gain their distribution.”
"With its expertise in providing high-quality entertainment to hip-hop fans, MixCast adds another valuable and truly unique offering to our extensive video collection,” says Akimbo CEO Josh Goldman. “The Akimbo Service is an ideal vehicle for progressive content companies like MixCast that want to leverage the world’s first and largest Internet video-on-demand service for television to reach new audiences.”
