HIV/AIDS continues to grow and devastate communities of color—from the countries of Africa to the Caribbean. Now Mad Linx, host of one of the top-rated shows on BET—"Rap City"—lends his celebrity to help in the fight against AIDS.
Mad Linx will co-host the LIFEbeat: The Music Industry Fight AIDS Hearts & Voices Concert Series entitled Reggae Gold Concert Summer Jump-Off, co-sponsored by NYC radio station Power 105.1 FM. International reggae artists, including Beenie Man, Wayne Wonder, and a special guest performance by Foxy Brown, will come together for the first time to address HIV/AIDS in the West Indies. The event will take place on July 18 at Webster Hall in New York City.
"I want to do anything I can do in helping to educate people about HIV/AIDS as well as helping in the battle to stop the spread of the disease," says Mad Linx. "We have to be proactive in addressing the problem, especially in the Caribbean." According to LIFEbeat, as of 2004, there were over 22,000 reported cases of HIV/AIDS in Jamaica , with the National HIV/STD Prevention and Control Program citing a total of 578 new AIDS cases reported in Jamaica from January to June of that year. Adolescent females, ages 10 to 14 and 15 to 19, had two and three times the risk of HIV infection, respectively, than boys of the same age group.
LIFEbeat- The Music Industry Fights AIDS, is a non-profit organization dedicated to HIV/AIDS prevention. Hearts & Voices is a music therapy program that shares the healing power of music through live entertainment for people living with AIDS in health care facilities across New York City. Mad Linx can be seen on BET's "Rap City" Monday-Friday, 5-6pm (EST).
