The ceremony and concert will be preceded by an exclusive invite-only NY premiere screening of the Starz InBlack Original documentary concert film Dead Prez: It’s Bigger than Hip-Hop, which will premiere on Starz InBlack Friday, June 9 at 10 pm ET. Dead Prez: It’s Bigger than Hip-Hop is a one-hour concert documentary which includes intimate interviews with dead prez members M-1 and stic.man, who share their thoughts on such topics as world politics, urban poverty, Black pride, healthy living and the power of Black women.
Revolution! Awards recognize artists and industry leaders of color who use their work as vehicles for social change, to foster solidarity and blaze new trails.
The event, now in its second year, will be hosted by M1 of dead prez and noted journalist Michela angela Davis. Revolution! will take place at the Apollo Theatre beginning at 8 pm. Revolution! will feature performances by dead prez, Martin Luther, Burnt Sugar Arkestra Chamber, Imani Uzuri and Kameko.
This year’s honorees are: Lee Daniels, producer of The Woodsman and Monster’s Ball and director of the forthcoming Shadowboxer; Warrington Hudlin, president of the Black Filmmaker Foundation and producer of popular feature films House Party, Boomerang, and Bebe’s Kids; Thomas Allen Harris, Director of the award-winning film The Twelve Disciples of Nelson Mandela and That’s My Face; Keith Beauchamp, director and writer of the groundbreaking documentary film The Untold Story of Emmett Till; and dead prez, one of the nation’s pre-eminent progressive hip-hop bands.
“We’re very excited to present Revolution! Awards to these great artists,” said Moikgantsi Kgama,” Executive Director of Imagenation. “They are people who have demonstrated exemplary work that is both uncompromising and visionary. Their works embody the artistry that will be featured in our new cinema.”
“dead prez is tremendously proud to debut our film as part of Imagenation’s Revolution! Awards,” said M1. “We are also honored to receive a Revolution! Award in recognition of our dedication to using music to assist our peoples' liberation and empowerment.”
Proceeds from the 2006 Revolution! Awards will go towards the building of the Imagenation Soul Cinema, Harlem’s first and the nation’s only independent movie theater dedicated to showcasing films from the African Diaspora. The cinema is scheduled to open next year.
“Imagenation plays an important role in building awareness of contemporary black independent film,” said Warrington Hudlin. “I look forward to its future initiatives and am extremely pleased to be a 2006 Revolution! Award recipient.”
Taped in San Francisco, Calif., “Dead Prez: It’s Bigger Than Hip-Hop” brings attention to the inadequacies of the public education system, minority entrepreneurship, and social revolution. The documentary is infused with dialog and interviews not only from dead prez but also from Kamel Bell, owner of Ankh Marketing and son of incarcerated Black Panther Herman Bell, Fred Hampton, Jr., son of Black Panther Chairman Fred Hampton, Bay-area rapper Ise Lyfe, Hip Hop activist/radio personality Davey D and performances of some of dead prez’ most potent songs from their highly charged catalog like “Know Your Enemy,” “They Schools,” “Hell Yeah,” and “Bigger Than Hip Hop.”
