A provocative, hard-hitting look at three young girls from the same tough neighborhood who all make the wrong choices--ultimately crossing paths in juvenile hall before continuing along on their own difficult journeys. On the Outs, which received widespread critical acclaim when it premiered theatrically in January, will be released on DVD May 9th from Polychrome Pictures.
A fictional film based on the stories of real girls from the streets and juvenile detention who lent their voices and unique stories to the filmmakers, On the Outs features complex and nuanced performances in a gritty film with smart editing and a unique use of hand-held cameras to create a jarring reality.
In On the Outs, Anny Mariano is Suzette, the sheltered, 15-year-old daughter of a single mother whose first crush on the wrong boy has life-changing repercussions. Judy Marte (Raising Victor Vargas) is Oz, a 17-year-old drug dealer with her own corner and street cred. Paola Mendoza (also a co-creator of the film) is Marisol, a crack-addled, 17-year-old, single mother struggling with her addiction and to retain custody of her child.
Directed by Lori Silverbush (who also wrote the screenplay) and Michael Skolnik, On the Outs was filmed in Jersey City. The film's title is taken from a term used to refer to the outside world by residents of a detention center.
An "Official Selection" of both the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival and the 2005 Berlinale Forum, On the Outs is winner of the "Grand Jury Prize, Best Feature Film" and the "Audience Award, Best Feature Film" at the 2005 Slamdance Film Festival; the "Maverick Award, Best Digital Feature" at the 2005 Cinequest Film Festival; the "Grand Jury Prize, Best Feature Film" at the 2005 Sonoma Valley Film Festival; "Special Jury Prize for Narrative Feature" at the 2005 Florida Film Festival; and the "Jury Prize, Narrative Feature" at the 2005 Deauville Film Festival.
Launched in June 2005, Los Angeles/New York-based Polychrome Pictures has a planned release schedule in 2006 of three films theatrically and 15-20 titles on DVD in the genres of drama, comedy, horror, urban, children's, music and special interest. The company was founded by industry veterans Arnie Holland and Geno Taylor. Polychrome is distributed exclusively in the U.S. and Canada by Warner Home Video.
