Indianapolis police are investigating a homicide Wednesday. The incident involves an aspiring artist who says he shot in self-defense.

Police say the artist known as D-Shock, a rapper, shot and killed a masked man armed with a shotgun early Wednesday morning in Speedway. The victim was found at the bottom of a stairwell at the West Wind Terrace Apartments near I- 465 and Crawfordsville Road.

DeAngelo Morrison, a 21-year-old aspiring rap artist, told police he saw people in a car waiting near the entrance of his building when he got home to his apartment complex at around 5:00 am. When he went inside, he was followed by the masked man. When Morrison got to his door, he turned and shot the masked man in the chest.

"The deceased individual had apparently approached another individual in the building while armed with a shotgun. The other individual in the building fired on this individual and of course he died as a result of his injuries," said Captain Alan Jones, Indianapolis Police Department.

Police said the man who was killed is Deshawn Givens, also 21. They say he lived across the street and they believe robbery was a motive.
