It's been nearly a decade since rap artist Tupac Shakur was murdered in Las Vegas. Since then, dozens of rappers have been the cause or the victims of deadly violence in our community. The latest case involves a young musician killed outside a local McDonalds.

The murder took place last Friday, April 7 and now we have confirmation from the coroner's office that the victim was 21 year old Kenneth West.

People who knew him say he wasn't a gang member, he was an enthusiastic young artist who just finished a new CD and was trying to make a name for himself. His lyrics are rather tame compared to the violent themes often found in gangsta rap.

West, or "Mac" as he was known in his rap group called the West Coast Head Bustas, was shot in the back seat of a car last friday night, in the drive-thru lane of the McDonalds at Sahara and Maryland Parkway.

"We're in the entertainment business. We're trying to sell fun and people flinging gunshots off and espousing criminal conduct, to my way of thinking, I don't think they have any place here in Las Vegas," said Metro Sheriff Bill Young.

There are dozens of recording studios in Las Vegas where rap and hip-hop artists create new material every day and many of those musicians feel the industry is getting a bad rap.

"I've been doing this for years and I haven't done anything to get myself in trouble," said one local artist.

In this latest shooting, a Metro officer arrived and fired his weapon, injuring one of the assailants, but at this point, no one has been charged with the murder of Kenneth West.

In an effort to cut down on rap-related violence, Sheriff Young has urged the gaming industry not to book rappers whose songs are filled with lyrics that promote violence.

Earlier this year, Metro Seargent Henry Prendes was shot and killed by a local rapper whose lyrics often glorified violence against police.
