In the hustle and bustle of southwest Houston sits Sharpstown Mall. An urban affair of sorts. And catering to a hip hop crowd at one of the many bling bling shops is a short jeweler who stands 10 feet tall in the hip hop industry. That jeweler is TV Johnny Dang.
The Vietnam native now calls Houston home and the Hip Hop nation his customer. Dang has been able to break into a celebrity market that has long been corned by Harry Winston on the west coast and Jacob the Jeweler on the east.
The Houston resident says his family has been in the jewelry business since he can remember and he continued that tradition when he arrived here in America. He formed a partnership with Houston based rapper Paul Wall and the rest is history.
TV Jewelry caters to all of Houston rappers from Slim Thug, Mike Jones to his business partner Paul Wall. But Dang is making a lot of noise on the coast as well. He's made jewelry or now the very popular Grillz for such artists as Nelly, Kanye West, Lil John, Ludacris and the list goes on.
So how did Johnny do it. He says while jewelers like Jacob charges an arm and a leg, he charges a lot less for quality that's just as high or higher. He says he passes the savings on to the customer and relishes in quantity. TV Johnny puts Houston on the jewelry map.
