The Serendipity festival concert by critically acclaimed hip-hop artist Talib Kweli is sold out. Kweli performs March 19 at 8 p.m. in Dana Auditorium.
Kweli rapped alongside Mos Def and DJ Hi-Tek in the late '90s as part of the group Black Star. The trio of up-and-comers and their self-titled 1998 album debut helped usher in a short-lived hip-hop revival that took the music back to its roots.
In 2000, Kweli and Hi-Tek followed with a second release, their Reflection Eternal album, which firmly established them apart from Mos Def. As a solo artist, Kweli released Quality in 2002 and remained a critical favorite. He released The Beautiful Struggle in 2004.
Born in Brooklyn as the eldest of two sons born to college professors, Kweli's first name, Talib, is an Arabic name meaning "the seeker or student," while his last name is a Ghanaian name meaning "of truth or knowledge."
He began developing his literary gift in elementary school, when he'd write short stories and poems. In high school he turned to hip-hop as an outlet for his self-expression. He is known for the socially conscious themes in his music.
At the concert March 19, cigarette lighters, matches, recording equipment, backpacks, food or drinks will be prohibited. Persons will be subject to a security search.
