Recently a judge in Miami issued a 26 page opinion stating that the hip-hop/rap label Slip-N-Slide Records has the right to release the album of rapper Pitbull which was recorded prior to signing with TVT Records.
The album in question titled "Welcome to the 305," has been ruled to be perfectly legal as long as it places a label on the cover stating the release contains previously recorded material.
The contested material was previous recorded by rap artist Pitbull in 2001 for Slip-N-Slide prior to the signing with TVT Records. The outcome of this case is now in the jurisdiction of a US District Court Judge, who will deny or approve the opinion of the previous judge.
TVT claims Slip-N-Slide is currently in the process of cashing in on the rappers huge debut status.
"TVT has invested substantial time, effort and resources to develop [Pitbull] as an artist and to develop, market and release the M.I.A.M.I. album on a worldwide basis." Gottlieb said in filed court papers.
Ted Lucas, the owner Slip-N-Slide made a statement that Pitbull had verbally approved of the release and had no objections to its release whatsoever.
“The court finds extremely significant the fact that the artist himself is not a party to this lawsuit and the lack of any evidence that he has expressed any negative feeling toward the release of 305,” the opinion stated.
Slip-N-Slide has further made the statement that if the album is not in stores by the holidays, they would sue TVT for $4 million in damages.
