Last night at the BMI Urban Awards, hip hop/rap artists Lil Jon and R. Kelly took top honors at the Fontainebleau Resort in Miami, Florida.
R. Kelly and Lil Jon were named songwriters of the year with four "most performed song" awards. The hit hip hop song "Yeah" featuring Usher was named the song of the year.
Petey Pablo and Kanye West also won awards. Petey Pablo won the first urban ringtone award for the hit song "Freek-A-Leek." Kanye West won the Producer of the Year award.
Charlie Wilson and The Gap Band were noted as BMI's Icons for the "enduring influence on generations of music makers."
At a party next door, Nelly held his own event at the Opium Garden, which was very similar to the BMI party.
Lil Jon appeared in full-party mode while he was spinning records such as Run-DMC's "Rock Box" and A Tribe Called Quest's "Scenario." He was also seen giving away shots of tequila from the extravagant bling-bling bottle he is well known for.
In a quick overview or the event, 70 songwriters were honored for the most performed urban format songs of 2004.
