The annual BMI Urban Awards are presented by U.S. performing rights organization BMI, honoring the songwriters, producers and publishers of the past year’s most performed urban songs on U.S. radio and television. The black-tie ceremony will be hosted by Del R. Bryant, President & CEO of BMI, and Catherine Brewton, Vice President, Writer/Publisher Relations.
The GAP Band will be honored as this year’s BMI Icon. The honor is given to creators of music who have been “a unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers.” They join previous Icons Al Green, Isaac Hayes, James Brown, Paul Simon, Brian Wilson, Carlos Santana, Dolly Parton, and Van Morrison.
Also awarded will be the Urban Song of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Producer of the Year and Publisher of the Year. BMI will also recognize the Top Urban Producers of 2004-2005, as well as the BMI songwriters whose songs have hit #1 on the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop Charts.
Fronted by Charlie Wilson and his brothers Ronnie and Robert, the GAP Band is one of the most influential groups in R&B history. Songs like “You Dropped a Bomb on Me,” “Party Train,” “Burn Rubber,” “Oops Upside Your Head,” “Early in the Morning” and “Outstanding” rank as some of the most sampled tracks in today’s urban music. The trio will be saluted with an all-star musical tribute that evening.
Now marking its 65th year in business, BMI is an American performing rights organization that represents more than 300,000 songwriters, composers and publishers in all genres of music. With a repertoire of more than 6.5 million musical works from around the world, the non-profit-making corporation collects license fees from businesses that use music, which it then distributes as royalties to the musical creators and copyright owners it represents.
