It all started last summer when rap and hip hop artist Nelly did a "shout out" to the luxury accessories label Judith Leiber in his hit single Flap Your Wings. As a thank you, the label designed a custom monogrammed case for his SidekickPDA in royal blue alligator and crystals. They've been inseparable ever since: hip-hop meets hip haute.
Nelly (whose real name is Cornell Haynes) hosted an event at the Judith Leiber store on Madison Avenue that raised more than $61,000 for his charity, 4Sho4Kids, a nonprofit for disabled children.
Then the platinum-selling artist posed for Leiber print ads along with actress Nia Long and celebutante Ivana Trump.
And now Nelly and Leiber are teaming again in a special collection of bejeweled bling with partial proceeds benefiting Nelly's charity. There's a jeans belt buckle (which Nelly wears in the print ads), with hand-set crystal stones layered over an alligator pattern in sterling silver; it retails for a mere $2,645. And a "Cornell Jet Bag" carry-on luggage piece made of calf suede, trimmed in python and retailing for $3,395. A duplicate of Nelly's Sidekick case will set you back $950 (unless you want diamonds for $9,500). There are also reptile-skin cuffs with pavé crystal snaps that cost $100 to $150. The limited-edition collection will be available from September through December at Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue stores, or by calling Judith Leiber at 866-542-7167.
But the hip-hopper isn't stopping there. It was announced last month that Reebok has teamed with the chart topper for a line of apparel, accessories and footwear (look for men's shoes to debut this holiday season). Reebok has similar deals with 50 Cent and Jay-Z. A small line with Pharrell Williams sputtered before it really got started amid lawsuits.
And the lady herself, Judith Leiber, will make a rare personal appearance at Bloomingdale's in Boca Raton this fall.
