Three years after the death of TLC's Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, the rapper's mother, Wanda Lopes-Colemon, has filed a lawsuit against Mitsubishi, claiming the automaker failed to warn consumers that its Montero SUV was rollover susceptible.
Lopes died in Honduras in 2002, when her 2001 Mitsubishi Montero tipped over. According to what police have said, Lopes suffered a fatal blow to the head, which killed her instantly.
In the suit, Lopes' mother claims that the rapper was driving at a normal speed, when she swerved to avoid a stopped car, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Upon swerving, the SUV flipped.
Jeff Harris, Lopes-Colemon's attorney, told the newspaper he will use a study on vehicle rollovers to prove his claim that Mitsubishi should have warned consumers about the Montero's potentially fatal design flaw.
According to MTV's report, there were a dozen passengers in the SUV at the time of the accident; all survived except Lopes. Some passengers are suing Lopes' estate, claiming she was to blame for their injuries.
The attorney for Mitsubishi has filed a response to the Lopes-Coleman suit, denying any wrongdoing from the automobile manufacturer, according to MTV.
There are no specific damages being sought in the lawsuit.
