Without question, we all like to be entertained. I personally, have never liked gossip and I am often disappointed that our community is so fascinated by it. But who am to judge, whatever makes you happy, as long as you are not hurting anyone, shit, do what you have to do.
There is something, however, inherently wrong when a corporation like Emmis and Hot 97 allows content to be expressed over the air that could get niggas KILLED. I can certainly understand the fear imposed by Satellite Radio, the need to have the best ratings and the need to remain in the top 5 but at what cost to the listeners and the artists?
This reminds me, regrettably, of the former KKBT in Los Angeles BEFORE Radio One owned it and it was, in my opinion, one of the most racist stations to work for in the country. I know because I worked there. We nicknamed it KKKBT. I thought those days were dead, when emulators of black culture were hired to make the 6 figure salaries who sounded black on the air but were everything but Black people and Black interns were falsely promised promotions for providing current street culture, slang and expressions to the non-Black well paid announcers who wouldn’t be caught DEAD in the hood. Ironically, I was often repulsed at how the Black listeners accepted this betrayal at remotes and concerts where these “actors” who I never saw in the projects where I grew up, were paid huge dollars to host and appear.
Perhaps those days are dead and now corporations have come up with a new form of, let’s just say, ‘having their cake and eating it too.' I’m noticing multicultural staffs on many morning shows that play ALL black music. That’s fine, I mean, we are the world and we are supposed to be the children too ... but why are there no multicultural staffs at rock radio, Spanish stations, Japanese, Chinese, Talk and Country stations either? I mean I’m not trying to start shit, I don’t have a problem with other races of people wanting to work and make money, I’m just asking a question to the corporations.
Commercial radio does deserve credit for hiring Black announcers for prominent positons now but for what reason... to keep shit brewing in the streets? This allows the executives a winning position because when people complain about content, they can say “at least we are hiring real Black announcers now, what the hell do you people want?” In the end, sadly, there is nobody to blame but us for this latest trend of brewing beef on the air. I mean nobody is holding a gun (yet) to these brotha’s heads and making them talk shit about each other. How hard is it to see the massive impact and benefit that Black music has made on the world without becoming false martyrs?
