Although local ministers organized a well-publicized boycott of rap artist Nelly's performance at Arkansas State University, there were no protesters outside the venue and the emcee’s performance for a crowd of 6,300 went off successfully. However, there was a little bump in the night.
Arrest reports show that three individuals in Nelly’s camp were detained by Jonesboro police on charges that include disorderly conduct, second-degree assault, resisting arrest, criminal trespassing and obstruction of justice.
Trouble started when the three men — 19-year-old Larry Buchanan, 21-year-old Ortega Henderson and 33-year-old Mario Tanksley, "the production manager for the college show" in Arkansas — were asked by event staff to cease selling CDs near the arena's main entrance during the show. When they began to hand the CDs out for free, police at the scene were called in to intervene. Several officers attempted to usher the men from the building but were met with resistance, the arrest reports read. Police responded by trying to cuff Buchanan, at which point McDaniel said Henderson attacked one of the officers from behind, wrapping his arm around the cop's neck in a poorly executed headlock attempt.
Several officers wrestled both Buchanan and Henderson to the ground, McDaniel said, and despite warnings that he would be tasered if he continued to resist, Buchanan stood up, a move police interpreted as aggressive. Buchanan was tasered and the three men were eventually detained, McDaniel said. All three were arraigned on Monday morning and released on bail amounts ranging from $2,000 to $4,000.
