Miami is famous for fine ass women, The King of Freak Nasty Luke, and its heavy bass and Latin influenced sound. Pitbull, a protégé of Luke has been hard at work trying to create his own niche in the sun-ridden oasis. Pitbull, a Cuban American rapper, spent the early part of his career touring with Luke and studying the game. Pitbull’s skills caught the ear of Irv Gotti. "Gotti asked me if I had any songs written. I told him all I did was freestyle. He said, freestyle is great but it doesn't make money." Pitbull traveled to New York to meet with Irv Gotti but blew his opportunity. He regrouped and continued to work on his craft.
His refreshing sound has led to him being put in heavy rotation in FL, CA, TX and ATL and he was named the King of Miami, Hardest Working Artist, and the Best Rapper in Miami by the New Times. He has flooded the mixtape market with constant releases of underground rhymes full of street reality over popular beats. The humble hard working rapper on rise is quick to point out that Luke is the King, and you can call him the Prince of Miami.
He spits lyrics in both English and Spanish and rhymes about issues that he dealt with or observed. His lyrics can start a jump off and also convey pain. Pit’s first album had a definite Miami feel to it, but it is was neither Miami bass or Crunk, it has more of an old school flavor to it. Lil Jon and the Diaz Brothers along with some other producers provided the beats. Pit has been influenced by Spanish artist, but only points to Pun as in influence in the rap game.
It is hard to get into the rap game no matter where you are from and what you look like. But Pit has found it harder as a Spanish cat from the south to get his. “Fuck yea it is harder for a Spanish artist than a black or white artist. Eminem blew the fucking doors wide open for white artist. I’m white but I’m Spanish and I grew up different from Eminem… Other than Pun, they look at Fat Joe and he sells a million and then comes back and sells 200,000. People are asking; ‘what the fuck, is this Spanish shit; just a wave or is it something that has longevity to it?’
One key to his success is his constant networking and working with people within the business. “I keep good relationships with the DJs, I’m not an asshole and I make sure they get their drops and when they come to my town that they are taken care of.
