Since his new CD didn't do as well as he'd expected LL Cool J has found a new way to make money — he's suing Fubu, the clothing line that he helped make famous.
The rap artist has filed a lawsuit for an undisclosed amount in the Supreme Court claiming that he has not been adequately compensated for his endorsements of the clothing line.
Fubu was founded in 1992 by Daymond John, of Hollis, Queens, which happens to also be LL's hometown. The clothing line quickly became popular with hip-hop fans.
LL began wearing the brand in 1993 and it wasn't long before his face became synonymous with the clothing. Even now if you go to Fubu’s website you will see LL Cool J’s face plastered all over the place. LL also appeared on Fubu’s CD release The Good Life, from the company's FB Entertainment. The disc featured the song "Fatty Girl" with LL, Ludacris and Keith Murray.
LL now claims that those types of endorsements helped the company make hundreds of millions. In 1999 it was reported that Fubu was making over $200 million U.S. annually. Last year alone they made over $380 million U.S.
LL, who had a clothing line in the '80s called Troop, is trying to get back into the fashion industry. He's working on a new line, James Todd Smith, which is LL’s real name. The rapper told AllHipHop.com that the line will feature classy suits, jeans and button up shirts and will be sold in upscale clothing stores.
