Rapper Ludacris has made Sundance history with his new movie Hustle + Flow - it has become the biggest purchase at the film festival.
The Atlanta, Georgia-based hip-hop star teamed up with John Singleton to make the rap movie for $2 million (GBP1.05 million) and now he has sold the project to Paramount Pictures and MTV Films for a staggering $9 million (GBP4.7 million).
Ironically, movie bosses at both Paramount and MTV passed on the idea three years ago (01) when producer Singleton first offered it to them.
The producer then funded the film himself, but never expected there to be a furious bidding war after the movie premiered at Sundance on Saturday night (22JAN05).
In Hustle + Flow, Ludacris, real name Chris Bridges, plays a rapper who inspires a pimp to turn his back on sex and become a hip-hop star.
The movie also features Ray star Terrence Howard, 8 Mile star Taryn Manning and Anthony Anderson.
The film created a controversy last year (04) when Anderson was accused of raping an extra in his trailer on the set of the movie.
