The makers of Kool cigarettes tell Maine's attorney general that the company will scale back some marketing practices that critics don't think are all that cool.
Steven Rowe heads the tobacco enforcement committee of the association representing attorneys general.
Earlier this month, he accused the company of violating a legal settlement between the tobacco industry and 46 states. At issue was a marketing campaign featuring hip-hop characters. Critics said it was aimed at black youths.
In a letter to Rowe, a Brown and Williamson attorney says the company is no longer using images of rappers, disc jockeys and dancers to try to sell the cigarettes, and stopped distributing cigarettes featuring those images on the packaging last month.
Under the terms of the legal settlement, tobacco companies can't target teens through their advertising or marketing.
