New Orleans-based rap artist, Turk (formerly of Cash Money and Hot Boys fame, AKA Tab Virgil) is relieved that charges against him have been reduced in court, as a result of testimony at his preliminary hearing. The rapper is being held on charges of attempted murder of a Memphis Deputy Sheriff. The charges against him have now been lowered from First Degree Attempted Murder to Second Degree.
His upcoming album, Penitentiary Chances, is scheduled for release on April 27 on Koch Records.
A surprise witness in the courtroom testified that several men, wearing black masks, broke into the Memphis apartment where the rapper was staying, and immediately began shooting. The witness testified that the men did not identify themselves, and they did not produce a warrant.
A second charge that had originally been filed against the rapper was dropped when early ballistics tests showed that a second officer was shot by another police officer that was present at the scene.
Alan Grunblatt, Executive Vice President of KOCH Records says: "I consider Turk to be a real friend. I've always been convinced of his innocence, and I'm glad the case has taken a positive turn."
There was no testimony from the prosecution referring to drugs, although the sheriffs department had told local media that they were on a drug raid.
The case will be going before a grand jury. Procedures in that state do not allow for any defense attorneys to be present there or to offer evidence. Only the prosecution side can testify.
In an action not stemming from that hearing, new federal charges have been filed against Turk in relations to a weapon charge.
Penitentiary Chances will drop on April 27th.
