The rapper known as 'Turk' sits in a Memphis jail accused of trying to kill a Shelby County Sheriff's Deputy. So when his publicists called our station requesting video of stories we've done, we started wondering if they were hoping to use it to promote his new CD.

Those who know "rap" say the whole thing could play to Turk's advantage. Daniel Scurlock works at Pop Tunes. He says, "I am not going to say that its going to harm him. It might help him because he has publicity. It gets his name out there so that it might help him sell more CDs than his last CD."

Turk's publicist flatly denies his run in with the law has anything to do with publicity. Phyllis Pollack with Def Press says, "Turk certainly did not get in this situation to try to sell records." But in the release about his new CD it says, "The album's release is being planned as the rapper is being held on $750,000 bond, on charges of an attempted murder of a Memphis Deputy Sheriff."

Turk's press person says the candor is to help raise awareness about Turk's legal defense fund-- though she wouldn't rule out the possibility that it could all wind up in future song or video. Pollack says, "There are a lot of stereotypes about rappers, but rappers like Turk are just singing about things that they are seeing and things that have happened to themselves."

"In many cases, jail is not a deterrent, it's a badge of honor for some," says Shelby County Sheriff Mark Luttrell. And if he ever does flip to M TV and sees the shoo tout with his deputies in a Turk video, Sheriff Luttrell says he will feel two emotions -- anger and alarm. Luttrell explains, "There are segments of our society that thrive on this behavior... and that needs to be an alarming phenomenon to all peace loving citizens."

Turk's press person points out another rapper, 'Tupac', who was once accused of shooting two policemen but was eventually cleared of all charges. She stresses that Turk is innocent until proven guilty.
