State Rep. James Henry "Hank" Harper Jr., D-West Palm Beach, is teaming with rapper Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew fame to try to register 40,000 new Florida voters.
Aimed at 18- to 34-year-olds "within the hip-hop generation," the campaign will feature rallies in 10 cities and include stops at four historically black colleges. Election 2004: The Movement Tour begins March 27 at Florida Memorial College in Miami and is scheduled to include a June 19 event somewhere in Palm Beach County.
Harper is a two-term state House member who recently filed to run for Palm Beach County commission.
Campbell gained fame when 2 Live Crew's 1989 album As Nasty as They Wanna Be was branded obscene by Broward County Sheriff Nick Navarro. A federal court sided with Navarro, but an appeals court overturned the ruling and the U.S. Supreme Court agreed in 1992. Navarro was voted out of office that year.
Harper said he and Campbell met at forum for black lawmakers on how to connect with hip-hop culture. In addition to Harper and Campbell, members of the Movement Tour board include singer-songwriter Wyclef Jean, pro football stars Edgerrin James and Warren Sapp, and reigning Miss Black Universe Karley Wright.
