Snoop Dogg is the only rapper who doesn't want to be No. 1 with a bullet. That's not easy when you're the type of artist who lives with the idea that each day might be his last.
"He travels with as much security as the president of the United States," reports "Starsky & Hutch" director Todd Phillips. "Snoop's team of ex-cops came to the set hours early every day to sweep the premises. They had to make sure it was safe for him."
The rapper, who plays Huggy Bear in "Starsky & Hutch," the movie version of the '70s hit TV series, doesn't exactly know the word "safe."
"After our first wardrobe fitting for the movie, Snoop was leaving the set and there was an attack on his convoy of eight cars," Phillips says.
Owen Wilson, who plays Hutch, shakes his head.
"You would think that someone who has those sort of concerns and fears wouldn't ride around in a car emblazoned with 'Dogg-Mobile' on the side."
Hey, no one ever said this Dogg was running around with his tail between his legs. But you can't really see Snoop's legs as he walks down a hallway at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. Three massive bodyguards flank him and escort him into an interview suite where the slim, tall rapper in a blue velvet jogging suit begins this interview with a soft-voiced, "Hello. Please don't come in here with preconceptions of me. Form your own opinion."
Ask him why people are after him, and he just shrugs. Snoop can sum up his popularity and his problems in one sentence: "I tell the truth. And I know what I'm talking about. That's why I'm a threat."
Does he live his life in fear -- especially given the fate of other rappers who dared to live their life on the edge like Tupac and Biggie Smalls?
"I ain't scared. I ain't scared," he repeats. "Scared is no way to live."
