Music mogul Russell Simmons and a leading American rabbi are asking the African-American community to "join forces with the Jews in a common struggle against expressions of anti-Semitism in Europe and America." In an article Simmons co-authored with New York Rabbi Marc Schneier, the music producer wrote, "The Jewish community cannot fight anti-Semitism on its own."
"Blacks and Jews have a long history of shared struggles to promote social change, such as in the struggle for equal rights."
The article appeared in major Jewish and African-American papers in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Simmons writes: "If Martin Luther King were alive today, he would protest against the new wave of anti-Semitism. Nor would he be silent in the face of the behavior of many political leaders who do not protest against loathsome expressions of hostility toward Jews."
