Trick Daddy, awaiting trial on drug possession, assault and weapons charges, was allowed to perform at a city-sponsored holiday party this week for about 5,000 children.
Kelly Penton, press secretary for Mayor Manny Diaz, wasn't sure how the rapper, whose real name is Maurice Young, became involved with the party. But Penton defended the choice, calling Young "a local artist who children are very familiar with and he had some positive things to say."
Young, who has denied all allegations, told the children that he felt a kinship with them, saying he was once an underprivileged child.
"Trick love the kids," he said at the annual party, held Monday at the Coconut Grove. Young also appeared last week at a city-sponsored HIV-AIDS awareness march.
Young — known for songs such as "I'm a Thug," "Sweatin' Me" and "In Da Wind" — faces assault and weapons charges stemming from a February dispute. He was arrested again in September after police allegedly found cocaine and marijuana in his shirt pocket.
Young has been on house arrest, but a judge has allowed him to perform at several concerts and awards shows. A trial date has not been set on any of the charges.
Penton said many of the children invited to Monday's event had been scammed out of a holiday show earlier this month. Thousands of children had paid $10 apiece for a show and scavenger hunt, but police said the event's promoter took off with the money.
"The real story here is these children, most of whom were underprivileged or scammed, were given the holiday celebration they deserved and got a free toy, lunch and entertainment," Penton said.
