A man who neighbors said was a rap artist on the No Limit label was shot to death on the front lawn of a house in Gentilly on Wednesday night.
Police said the 25-year-old man was shot at least three times in the face and once in the chest and died at the scene.
A neighbor reported seeing a man firing a gun on the lawn of the house near where the body was found. Police said the victim had pulled up to his apartment, got out of his car, left the engine running and was shot before he reached his front door.
Another neighbor said he heard at least five shots and called 911 about 5:45 p.m.
The victim's grief-stricken mother rushed to the scene and stood sobbing behind crime scene tape while a crew from the coroner's office placed barriers around the man's body. The door of his car was still ajar.
Police would not confirm a report from several people at the scene that the dead man was a popular rap artist known as Soulja Slim who lived in the upstairs apartment of the two-story duplex at 1618-20 Lafaye St.
