Anthony Wolf Jones, who was acquitted with hip-hop mogul Sean P. Diddy Combs in a high-profile gun possession case in New York City in 2001, was one of two men killed in a four-way gunfight early Tuesday outside an Atlanta nightclub, police said.
Jones, 38, of the Bronx in New York City, was killed about 4 a.m. outside Club Chaos in Atlantas Buckhead entertainment district, said Police Chief Richard Pennington.
Another man from the Bronx was arrested and charged with murder.
The other man killed was identified as Lamont Girdy, 38, also from the Bronx. Dozens of shots were fired during the shootout, which occurred at the bars closing time, and windows of nearby bars were shattered.
We have two people who were killed and two people wounded, and were fortunate more people werent killed because of so much random gunfire, Pennington said.
Jones and Combs were acquitted in March 2001 of gun possession and bribery charges stemming from a Dec. 27, 1999 shooting inside Club New York in which three people were injured. Rapper Jamaal Shyne Barrow was convicted of assault, reckless endangerment and weapons charges in the case.
Demetrius Flenory was charged with two counts of murder. He was treated at a hospital for gunshot wounds to the buttocks and then arrested. Officers said at least four people were involved in the shootout and more arrests were possible.
Police said they found $7,000 on Jones body and $5,000 on Girdys.
Pennington said the quarrel at the club was about a woman.
We think it could have been some feud or something, but we dont know. They had lots of cash, we do know that.
Besides Flenory, one man was hospitalized with a foot wound, questioned and then released.
Detective J.K. Brown said police had a couple of strong leads on a suspect. He said identifying witnesses and suspects was proving to be difficult.
A lot of this, were looking at nicknames, he said.
The fight started with an argument inside the club before it spilled into the streets, Pennington said.
The shooting happened as late-night bars in the area were preparing to close.
If the bars had closed earlier, this shooting may not have happened, Pennington said.
Police asked witnesses who were at the club to contact them.
