The party was to launch 50 Cent's Reebok G6 sneaker. But, looking at the security, you'd think it was the G8 summit.
A block-long barricade was set up outside Capitale to prevent any drive-by shootings or people storming the building, according to a party organizer. Entrance required a thorough pat-down and metal-detecting wands. And close to 50 uniformed officers surrounded the party, which lasted until 3 a.m. and drew Ice Cube, Mos Def, Rosie Perez, Lukas Haas, Joe Frazier, Steve Francis and Allen Iverson.
Cube, a veteran rapper whose tiff with Eazy-E provided fodder for several albums, added his voice to the chorus of hip-hop community leaders pleading for 50 Cent and Ja Rule to end their intensely violent rivalry.
"Beef is good," Cube told us. "It makes hip hop interesting. But they shouldn't take it to the street, they should keep it on wax."
50, who has been shot nine times and never leaves home without his bulletproof vest, was asked whether his new sneaks were bulletproof.
"No," he said. "But we're working on it."
