London’s premier new cultural venue ‘The Hospital’ launches its first gallery exhibition – Yes Yes Y’all on October 24th 2003. The exhibition is a celebration of Hip Hop’s first ten years; tracing its progress from the bleak streets of the South Bronx to the worldwide phenomenon Hip Hop is today. Hip Hop has outlived punk, new wave, house, techno and grunge and dominates today’s music, permeating the sound of commercially successful mainstream acts such as Limp Bizkit, Missy Elliot, Destiny’s Child and Nelly.
Thirty years have passed since Hip Hop first emerged from the mean streets of NYC. Yes Yes Y’all tells the story of the movements’ early pioneers and prime movers - Grandmaster Flash, DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa and Grand Wizard Theodore - while highlighting the evolution of mixing and scratching and the emergence of rapping MCs. The trail leads through the moment when Hip Hop broke out into the public consciousness with the release of the Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight”, and culminates with the rise of Run-DMC and the waning influence of the original pioneers. An overview of Hip Hop’s influence on musical life and culture in 2003 completes the exhibition.
There’s more to Hip Hop than just music. The exhibition also shows how the other layers fit together – the graffiti artists, the flyer designers and the dance moves of the B-boys – and how the movement that emerged from the violent gang culture of the Bronx’s began to emphasise unity and positivity.
‘Yes Yes Y’all celebrates the pioneers of Hip Hop. Kids who put on dances in the blighted Bronx without thought for profit or career, kids who painted subway trains, and kids who danced. Kids – children ¬ almost - who inadvertently created the most revolutionary music movement of the late-20th Century.’ said Mark Pringle, Exhibitions Curator, The Hospital Group. "I've been nuts about hip hop since ET Thorngren played me "The Message" back in the early 80's says The Hospital’s Creative Director, Dave Stewart. “It's great that The Hospital is celebrating the decade that led up to that amazing record and to all the amazing stuff that's followed. Hip Hop is probably the most enduring musical movement of the last 50 years. It is everywhere - on clothes and walls as well as decks - and Yes Yes Y'All acknowledges this fact”.
Yes Yes Y’all is a dynamic multi-media experience incorporating photographs by the likes of Charlie Ahearn (director of seminal Hip Hop movie ‘Wild Style’) and Martha Cooper as well as a ninety-minute audiovisual show by Jim Fricke (the noted curator of Seattle’s Experience Music Project). The exhibition is based on original Hip Hop materials supplied by EMP. Ahearn and Fricke are also the joint authors of the book that accompanies the exhibition; Yes Yes Y’all: Oral History of Hip Hop’s First Decade published in the UK by Perseus Press.
Throughout the three month exhibition, The Hospital will team up with the Camden Arts + Business Consortium in the gallery with a series of interactive events embracing all aspects of Hip Hop culture including breakdancing and live performances by DJs and MCs.
The Hospital is at 24 Endell Street, London WC2H 9HQ and The Gallery is open from 10am – 10pm Mon-Sat, 12pm – 8pm on Sundays. For information about the exhibition and tickets visit www.thehospital.co.uk
