LOS ANGELES, CA - October 9, 2003 - UrbanWorld Wireless, a leading content provider for urban entertainment news and lifestyle and Mobile Entertainment Forum (MEF), the global trade association representing mobile entertainment industry leaders, announced the first ever “Ringtone of the Year Award.” The event will take place at the Red Dragon inside of Mandalay Bay’s China Grill on Monday October 22, 2003 from 10PM and on during the Cellular Telecommunication & Internet Association (CTIA) to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Sands Expo Convention Center from October 21-23, 2003.
Rap Artist 50 Cent of Interscope Records will be honored with the first ever “Ringtone of the Year Award.” The ringtone version of the song “In Da Club” has been downloaded over 500,000 times, making it the most successful downloaded ringtone in U.S. mobile entertainment history.
According to research firm IDC, ringtone sales have skyrocketed to a $5 billion business in Japan and Europe. In the U.S., ringtone sales, while trailing Europe and Japan, are growing rapidly and are forecasted to reach $50 million by the end of this year, twice the dollar volume of CD singles.
“This is unprecedented success for the mobile entertainment industry because it signals the fast demand of popular mobile entertainment for consumers and telcos alike. It is clear that the coming wave of enhanced polyphonic and original recording ringtones is set to have explosive growth for the creative and technology community” said Ralph Simon, Chairman of the Mobile Entertainment Forum, Americas and one of the original pioneers of the mobile entertainment business worldwide.
Kevin Black, the National Urban Field Director at Interscope Records who heads the rap department and has assisted in the multi-platinum success of many rap artists such as Eminem, 50 Cent, Dr. Dre, Limp Bizkit, Bubba Spaxxx and Ruff Ryders will attend the “Ringtone of the Year” to accept the award on behalf of 50 Cent. Expected to attend are mobile entertainment industry professionals and music industry executives including Theda Sanderford of Def Jam Records and Robert Red of Priority Records. This event is open to the public.
