On October 13th, The 2003 Source Awards will be held. Every year it is a big event held by the original hip hop magazine, that has etched its mark in hip hop history. The awards show draws celebrities in music, sports, politics and entertainment.
This year, the confirmed celebrities so far are Ashanti, Baby, Bonecrusher, Clipse, David Banner, Elephant Man, Erykah Badu, Fat Joe, Ice Cube, Lil’ Kim, LL Cool J, Megan Good, P. Diddy, Pharrell & The Neptunes and Scarface, to name a few. The Awards will air in primetime during sweeps on BET on Tuesday, November 11th, 2003 at 8:00 pm (ET/PT).
Artists confirmed to perform are Nelly & Murphy Lee, Fabolous, Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz, Youngbloodz, Cam’Ron & The Diplomats, Wyclef, Trina and Ja Rule.
Joining these Hip-Hop superstars are luminaries such as Presidential Candidate The Reverend Al Sharpton, Roy Jones Jr., Ricky Williams of the Miami Dolphins, Mike Tyson and Afeni Shakur, who will celebrate the year in Hip-Hop.
“This year’s Source Awards will be the most exciting and most important event in recent Hip-Hop history,” said David Mays, Co-Founder of The Source and The Source Awards. “At this crucial moment in Hip-Hop’s evolution, we are pleased to be able to bring together all of the leaders of the Hip-Hop community under one roof, for one night, to celebrate our generation’s most powerful and influential culture.”
For the 2003 Awards, Lil’ Kim and Jay-Z lead the nominations with five each, including “Album of the Year.” Nelly, 50 Cent, Cam’Ron & The Diplomats each score four nominations. Scarface, Lil’ Jon & The East Side Boyz, LL Cool J, Clipse, Missy Elliott, Baby, David Banner, Ludacris & Disturbin The Peace, Pharrell and The Neptunes, and Eve all come in at three nominations each. Bonecrusher, Nas, Snoop Dogg, Slum Village, Field Mob and Ja Rule pull in two apiece.
This year’s Awards include new categories that celebrate emerging trends in Hip-Hop, including its potent international presence, the resurgence of dancehall-reggae and the unique voices from independent labels.
The eligibility period for The Source Hip-Hop Music Awards 2003 is June 1, 2002 through May 31, 2003.
