A Tribe Called Quest have got together to record a new track and say their long-awaited reunion album could be released by winter 2004.
Phife Dawg says the hip-hop trio reunited last month to record '(ICU) Doin' It' - a track set to be featured on the upcoming Violator Records compilation, 'V3: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly'
"Our records sound like we never left," the rapper explained last week. "The chemistry never dwindled.
"We saw each other for the first time in a minute, but it sounded like we never stopped recording with each other.
"The voices are pretty much the same. Q Tip's still got the whole nasal, abstract thing going on. My voice grew a little bit ... that's the only difference; my voice sounds a little older."
According to Phife, there is no set release date for the new Tribe album, though he says he expects a new single to reach stores by autumn 2004.
The diminutive star also revealed that since rumours of a Tribe reunion began, the crew had received countless offers of tracks to rhyme to.
He told MTV: "One problem that I've seen thus far is that a lot of producers come to me and say, 'I got the Tribe sound locked, I know exactly what y'all need'."
"I don't think they should do that because first of all, you don't have the Tribe sound locked. We don't even know what the Tribe sound is. It's a vibe that we've got when we go into the studio.
He told prospective track writers: "Submit what you're best at doing and if we like it, we're going to spit to it. Tribe is no exception as far as trying to be different [is concerned]. Just send some hot sh*t".
'V3: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly' - which also features tracks from Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, G-Unit, Tweet and Mobb Deep - is due to be released in the US on December 9.
Tribe members Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad are to both due to release solo LPs soon.
