Police warn nightclubs of rap song's gang link -Last week's gang-related shooting outside a Wichita nightclub was prompted by the same rap song that led to four people being shot outside an east Wichita club last year, police said Friday.
Lt. John Speer said police are encouraging bar owners to be careful when playing the song "Put Yo Hood Up" and other songs that could incite gang violence.
"We're not asking them to not play the song; they can do as they wish," Speer said. "We're just asking them to be responsible."
Speer said the song encourages club patrons to flash gang signs in a confrontational manner. One line in the song says, "We clicked up 30 deep and we always strap up." Speer said the lyric mean there is a group of 30 gang members who always carry guns.
It was during the playing of the song, Speer said, that a disturbance began on Jan. 27, 2002, outside Bleachers East, 330 S. Greenwich. Four people were shot outside the club.
On Aug. 29, Speer said, five people were shot outside the El Tequila Club near 21st and Amidon after a disturbance that began with the playing of the same song.
Speer likened the song to taunting cheers that might be heard during a game involving intense sports rivals.
"Take that and times it by 100, then add some guns to the mix," Speer said. "Then you mix in alcohol."
Speer said police have run into at least one other case where a song has prompted gangs to square off against each other. That occurred at the Cotillion, 11120 W. Kellogg.
"The club was literally divided," he said. "You've got the Crips on one side and the Bloods on the other."
He said that incident ended without violence.
Although the nine shooting victims in Wichita survived, "Put Yo Hood Up" has been blamed on at least one homicide elsewhere.
In Wrightsville, Ark., last fall, the song was played at a birthday party, prompting several people to flash gang signs. A subsequent fight ended when a 17-year-old pulled out a gun and shot and killed a 16-year-old.
