NEW YORK, N.Y. - AUGUST 7, 2003 - In an unprecedented national effort to ensure youth voter registration through the celebration of hip-hop culture, Russell Simmons and the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network will join Philadelphia Mayor John F. Street, local Clear Channel Radio1s Power 99 FM and WDAS 105.3FM and Clear Channel Entertainment to sponsor and host the Philadelphia Hip-Hop Summit, scheduled for Thursday, August 14, 2003. For the first time, participants attending a Hip-Hop Summit will be required to register to vote as a means of gaining a much sought after ticket to what promises to be one of the largest Hip-Hop Summits. The Philadelphia Hip-Hop Summit will be held at Temple University1s Liacouras Center on the corner of Broad and Montgomery Streets.....

We are encouraging millions of young people to register to vote and to become active in helping to transform American society, commented Russell Simmons. Hip-hop is the strongest cultural phenomenon among youth and the Philadelphia Hip-Hop Summit offers a great opportunity to positively impact the political process.

We are pleased to welcome the Hip-Hop Summit to Philadelphia, declared Mayor Street. Our city has a great tradition of encouraging young people to maximize their talents, artistic gifts and energy toward empowerment.

Hip-hop artists from across the nation confirmed to participate in the Philadelphia Hip-Hop Summit include DMX, Wyclef Jean, Musiq, Cam'ron, Redman, Method Man, Reverend Run, Joe Budden, Doug E. Fresh, dead prez, Floetry, Miss Jade, Cherub, Red Cafe and Black Ice, who will be joined by recording industry executives Lyor Cohen and Kevin Liles of Island/Def Jam, Damon Dash of Roc-A-Fella, Irv Gotti of Murder, Inc., Steve Stoute of Interscope and Chris Lighty of Violator, among others to be announced. In addition, Dr Rachael Ross, M.D., a practicing physician by day and a hip-hop DJ by night who uses the music to promote health education and Lady Emmy, the national spokesperson for Miss Black Teen USA will also participate.....

The theme of the Philadelphia Hip-Hop Summit is The Power and Unity of the Street, which emphasizes the tremendous potential for youth to exercise leadership in developing both political and economic empowerment, utilizing the growing influence of hip-hop culture throughout America. During the past three weeks, thousands of young people have been registered to vote as a prerequisite to attending the Summit.
