Afeni Shakur, the mother of Tupac Shakur, visited Fayetteville on Wednesday to promote a gospel concert scheduled there next month.
Afeni talked about the first Family Gospel Celebration during a news conference outside the Crown Arena. The show is scheduled for Aug. 1 at the Crown Arena.
Shakur, a Lumberton native, says the concert is an important project for her because gospel music helped her family cope with the death of her son. Tupac Shakur was fatally shot in 1996. The crime is unsolved.
"It's gospel music that brought us here," Shakur said.
"Every minute, every day of these seven years we've held the inspiration, hope, trust and belief that God was in control," she said.
Gloria Cox, Afeni's sister, also attended the news conference. They are the oldest siblings in their family, and Cox said they have a responsibility to lead in times of crisis.
She said that because of the healing that gospel music provides, they never sought vengeance for Tupac's death.
"It helped us at that time for our instincts to take over," Cox said.
The concert in the Crown Arena will feature gospel artists Lee Williams & The Spiritual QC's, Keith "Wonderboy" Johnson and The Williams Sisters. Tickets are priced at $17.50 to $23.50.
Some of the money raised will benefit the Georgia-based Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation, which supports performing-arts students.
Afeni Shakur started the foundation in 1997. She is also founder and chief executive of Amaru Entertainment/Amaru Records and Lumberton Pictures.
"I believe my son came into this world with a beginning date, a middle date and an end date," Shakur said. "God used my son in a wonderful way, (and) even after death continued to uplift his spirit."
Shakur will serve as executive producer on a movie about her son called, "Tupac: Resurrection." The movie is scheduled to be released in the fall.
