Russell Simmons and friends are bringing the heat to City Hall, as they prepare for their 7-Day Countdown To Fairness Rally on June 4th at Foley Square, NYC. Entertainers from Jay-Z, Nas, P-Diddy and Madonna to politicial leaders Senators Schumer and Clinton are gearing up to take action to put an end to the unfair Rockefeller Drug Laws set in 1973.
"Through the Countdown to Fairness coalition, which is growing steadily each day, the people of our community are speaking out and saying that enough is enough. These laws must be changed now," said Russell Simmons, Chairman of the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network. Over 100,000 activists are expected to join the long list of entertainers and politicians expected to be present.
This week The Hip-Hop Summit Action Network has launched a full-on-assault to get major results.
Video ads featuring Ludacris, Carly Simon, The Beastie Boys, Damon Dash and Erykah Badu will be distributed amongst major television outlets. The grassroots democracy group MoveOn.org is utilizing its national membership of 2 million activists to telephone the offices of the Governor and Majority Leader Bruno on Tuesday June 3 and ask them to repeal the laws. High School teachers throughout the state of New York have been requested to teach their students about the unfair Rockefeller Drug Laws and lead their students to the rally. Spanish audio and video ads, posters and brochures are being distributed to the New York Latino communities. Current polls are showing that 79% of New Yorkers want the laws reformed.
In other Russell Simmons news, the mogul was in Birmingham, Alabama this week promoting financial freedom for people with credit problems via his new Unirush debit card. "We write the checks for you. We return you to credit worthy status by reporting information," Simmons told the crowd at Birmingham City Hall. The card currently has 11,000 subscribers nationwide.
