Well, after months of multi-page ads in The Source, interviews in the media and soapbox lambasting of Eminem, Benzino proves that talk is cheap.
Last week's release of Benzino's second solo album garnered the self-proclaimed rap saviour a measly 14,463 units in first-week sales, leaving Redemption completely off the charts. Meanwhile, his nemesis, Eminem, continues to blaze the charts at #5 on Billboard with over 86,000 units sold last week for his 8 Mile album and over 49,000 units sold for the 2002 release, The Eminem Show.
Benzino, currently on Elektra Records with Missy Elliot, has had over five record label deals as a solo artist or with his group, Made Men/Almight RSO, including a brief stint on Def Jam Records and most recently, Motown Records in 2001. Redemption, however, has broken a personal record for Ray as all his previous releases have never Soundscanned over 10,000 in the first week. At this rate, Rendemption may go gold by April 2004. The coveted platinum plaque could be awarded as early as late 2005.
